About the Role
Focus Minerals is currently seeking a Mining Engineer: Open Pit to join them on an 8/6 roster based on site, reporting to the Superintendent: Technical Support. This is a hands-on technical role suited to an intermediate engineer looking to broaden their experience across the full mining cycle. You will contribute to a range of activities including dewatering, geotechnical analysis, environmental considerations and project management, with involvement in day-to-day decisions spanning initial pit designs through to rehabilitation and closure. The role also carries full ownership of drill and blast design, encompassing cross-department collaboration, execution oversight and post-blast review, and offers the opportunity to develop skills in cost reduction through budgeting and financial analysis.
Key Responsibilities
- Predominantly undertake short-term mine planning activities, with exposure and contribution to Medium to Long Term Planning expected.
- Examine mining methods and equipment to improve performance.
- Develop and improve systems and processes associated with open-pit mining.
- Provide recommendations and implement mine design.
- Full ownership of the drill and blast function, including blast design, pattern layout, charge design and timing sequencing for both open pit production and pre-strip activities.
- Oversight of blast execution, ensuring designs are implemented correctly and safely in the field.
- Conducting post-blast assessments including fragmentation analysis, and design reconciliation, with findings used to drive continuous improvement.
- Managing blast performance data and reporting, identifying trends and implementing design modifications to optimise outcomes.
- Liaising with the blast contractor and/or explosives suppliers to ensure design intent is delivered and value is maximised.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant blast management plans, regulatory requirements and site safety standards.
- Coordinate and collaborate with geology, survey, production, maintenance and contractor teams to ensure mine plans, designs and operational activities are effectively integrated and executed.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering.
- Minimum 3 years' experience in mine engineering, preferably in Open Pit Gold mining.
- Demonstrated experience in end-to-end drill and blast design and execution oversight, including production blasting in open pit environments.
- Proficiency in blast design software, specifically Orica ShotPlus preferred.
- Experience with Maptek Vulcan for both mine and drill and blast design preferred.
- Experience with both non-electric and electronic detonator systems, including tie-in design, will be highly considered.
- Exposure to technically challenging operations including variable ore bodies and difficult geotechnical ground conditions.
- Experience in mine planning, pit design and geological monitoring and assessment.
- Budgeting and forecast skills.
- Proven ability to meet mining targets whilst focusing on safety standards, operational efficiencies, productivity and cost effectiveness.
- Experience with Micromine Alastri for mine planning purposes preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- High level written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and organisational skills.
- Valid WA driver's licence.
